You will have financial dealing and therefore you need an NIE (Numero de Identidad de Extranjeros - Identity Number for Foreigners ). The NIE is required if you want to buy a property, purchase of a car and dealing with tax authorities.
You can obtain the NIE at the foreigners department of a police station with a passport with a copy, two photographs and the completion of form that you will get there, that’s all you need to get an NIE, it is recommend that you protect your NIE (this is just a simple paper with stamps) with plastic, it is also recommend that you make several photocopy of it, for safety, for the foreigners the NIE also serve as the NIF (número de identificación fiscal ), the fiscal number to identify to tax authorities.
According to Euroresidentes: In Alicante, people are advised to start queuing at 5.00 a.m. to get their NIE, because each morning the office opens at 8.30 a.m. and gives out numbers to the first 70 people in the queue. The rest have to return and queue again the next day. Your real estate lawyer or solicitor can obtain the NIE for you.
